Demonstrating the artist’s range of printmaking skills, this group of three prints includes two color lithographs and a woodcut. Quietly introspective, each work exhibits unique characteristics; the wood cut, “Feuille”, excels in simplicity, depicting a white flower on colored paper; “Théière sur fond gris” demonstrates the artist’s interest in the flattened picture plane and still lifes; and “La Forêt” creates organic interest in color and form.

Executed in the 20th century, this group of three prints are each signed, one with the artist’s initials, and numbered. Each work has full margins with deckled edges. “Feuille” measures 15 x 11 inches; with tape remains from previous mounting verso, otherwise in overall good condition. “La Forêt” was executed in 1946 and is on Arches paper, measuring 15 x 11 inches. A soft handling crease upper right, tape remains from previous mounting verso, otherwise in good condition. “Théière sur fond gris” has a soft handling crease in the lower margin, tape remains from previous mounting verso, otherwise in overall good condition.

Georges Braque (French, 1882-1963)

Renowned French painter and sculptor Georges Braque was one of the key members in the development of Cubism, along with Pablo Picasso. Born in Argenteuil, Braque trained to be a decorator and house painter while also studying painting at the École des Beaux-Arts in Le Havre. After moving to Paris, his work was influenced by the Fauves, including Henri Matisse and André Derain, as well as the late landscapes of Paul Cézanne. By the late 1910s, Braque’s oil paintings were characterized by an attention to geometry and perspective, questioning the practices at the time. In 1907, Braque met Pablo Picasso; their collaboration continued until 1914, shaping the Cubist movement. His work has been the subject of numerous museum retrospectives and can be found in private and public collections worldwide.
