Halfstocked in actively-grained wood, with brass furniture and backaction percussion lock. The rifled, octagonal barrel marked by the maker, S SETTLE and numbered 707. Made by Simon Settle (1823-1871) of Barren County, Kentucky. The Settles established themselves as gunsmiths in Kentucky in 1800, their rifles were highly prized. Simon Settle is considered the foremost maker of the family. Mid-19th century. Light wear. Overall length 142.9 cm.
