Item Details

Description

Very Rare and Fine Great Road Redware Jar with Green Copper Glaze, Southwestern VA or Eastern TN origin, early to mid 19th century, gracefully-potted ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, narrow opening with semi-rounded rim, and open strap handle, embellished with heavy ribbing and depressed terminals. Exterior surface covered in a dipped, dark-green copper glaze, the base and interior with light-green coloration. Excellent size, form, and color. A group of similar jars in the collection of MESDA are described as Southwestern VA origin, possibly Wythe County, VA. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, found approximately twenty years ago in Eastern Tennessee. Approximately 2 7/8" x 1 7/8" filled and colored hole on side of jar. Heavy chipping to base. Two adjacent rim chips, measuring approximately 1 1/8" each. A very shallow 1" chip on interior of rim. Glazed surface survives in otherwise remarkable condition. H 14 5/8".
