Chinese small dragon robe for a religious icon, Qing Dynasty, Guangxu era 1875-1908, the embroidered yellow silk-satin ground solidly couched with gold-wrapped threads with ten ''long'' (five-claw) dragon roundels (3/front, 2/shoulders, 5/back) on a key-fret ground above a ''lishui'' border embellished to the front and back with a pair of fu-lions capped with green manes and contesting ''the wheel of the law'', with further gold couching on the narrow blue silk-satin side pieces, the pink silk damask interior inscribed in ink: Longfei Guangxu ershi-nian jiawu-sui qinghe-yue gudan (''Longfei (=honorific appellation) Guangxu 20th year (=1895) jiawu (cyclical date) year, auspicious month and date'')and ''Xinnu Tianshui Jiang-shi jingzhu'' (respectfully presented by a female donor, Jiang family of Tianshui'' (minor wear). 17.75''length; 28.75''width. Provenance: Ex-collection of Mr. Julean H. Arnold (1879-1946), an American consular official in China (U.S.Vice Consul in Dalny 1904, Foochow 1906; U.S.Consul in Tamsui 1906-08, Amoy 1908-12, Chefoo 1912-12; U.S. Consul General in Hankow 1914) and American commercial attache in China 1914-1940. This robe was acquired during his tenure in China and is being offered for sale by his heirs.
