This lot showcases an absolutely Brilliant vintage 1970s Phillip Rosenthal & Co. large charger, hand painted and signed in the Studio Line series, by renowned artist Bjorn Wiinblad (Please see his history below). This spectacular charger measures 13 X 1.5" tall, and weighs 3 pounds. Our charger features brilliant green & yellow grounds, with masterful floral gilt banding. The base is marked with the proper Rosenthal + Germany stamp, as well as the valuable Studio Line designation (1972+), and Bjorn Wiinblad's signature, making this a truly valuable collectible...................... Philip Rosenthal founded the Philip Rosenthal Co. in 1879 and operated it as a family business, shortly thereafter moving his porcelain painting operation in Werl (North Rhine-Westphalia) to Selb in Bavaria, where he took residence in the Castle Erkersreuth. By 1884, the Rosenthal China Company had become well respected as a decorating studio, building the company by buying white ware porcelain blanks primarily from the established Hutschenreuther Co. Subsequently, using patterns developed by his wife, Maria, Philip opened his first production shop in Asch, Bohemia in 1891, and in 1897, founded Bauer, Rosenthal & Co. in Kronach, Bavaria. By 1900, Philip was able to pull all the various Rosenthal entities under one roof, with the name Porcelain Factory Philip Rosenthal & Co. The Rosenthal Empire continued to grow with the acquisitions of Porcelain Factory Marktredwitz Thomas & Ens in 1908, the Jacob Zeidler & Co., Railway Station, Selb, Krister Porcelain Manufactory of Waldenburg, Silesia in 1921, the Porcelain Factory Thomas of Sophienthal in 1928, and finally the Porcelain Factory Waldershof of Waldershof, Bavaria in 1936. In 1939 the company changed to Rosenthal AG porcelain, and still exists to this day........................ Most of our Bohemian / Bavarian qualifications including manufacturers identification, pricing and dating are accomplished by using the following outstanding references: Marks on German, Bohemian and Austrian Porcelain 1710 to the Present / by Robert Rontgen; Directory of European Porcelain / by Ludwig Danckert; Bohemian Decorated Porcelain / by Dr. James D Henderson; Marks & Monograms on European and Oriental Pottery & Porcelain (14th Revised Edition) / by Wm. Chaffers; Pottery & Porcelain Marks European, Oriental and USA In Chronological Order / by E. George Perrott; Here is perhaps the most comprehensive ROSENTHAL MARKS WEB SITE ANYWHERE; http://collectrosenthal.com/markings.html. ..................... Bjørn Wiinblad (September 20, 1918 - June 8, 2006), was a Danish painter, designer and artist in ceramics, silver, bronze, textiles, and graphics. His work has been shown widely in Europe, in the United States of America first in 1954 and in Japan, Australia and Canada in 1968. He was attached to the United States Embassy in Paris in 1947 as a poster designer. Later his posters illustrated Copenhagen's famous Tivoli Gardens and many other activities in Denmark, as well as the Olympic Games for the Handicapped at Seoul, the New World Symphony Orchestra academy in Miami, and the Royal Danish Ballet at the Metropolitan Opera House, all in 1988. His textile work was used for costumes for numerous ballets and stage presentations. Next to many other things, he illustrated the 16 volume Danish edition of "Arabian Nights' Entertainments". Wiinblad began working for Rosenthal in 1957, and was considered an important designer for the company. His most popular Rosenthal dinnerware design, Romance (Romanze), was a typical design in terms of its incredible level of fine decorative detail. Starting in 1971, he also designed an annual commemorative Christmas plate for Rosenthal, and was a major participant in finishing gorgeous 1970s Rosenthal Studio Line pieces.
