Framed and signed LR "M. Soyer". Moses Soyer (1899 - 1974) was active/lived in New York and known for figure-dancers, social realism and portraits. This painting is of a man and woman who stand out against a burnt umber / brown background. Approx ID / Board 24" x 18", OD 27" x 21". As found on the internet, "Soyer attended The Cooper Union and the National Academy of Design after immigrating from Russia as a teenager, later studied under Ashcan school artists Robert Henri and George Bellows. During the late 1930s Soyer was commissioned by the Works Progress Administration to paint public murals at the Greenpoint Hospital in Brooklyn and the Kingsessing branch post office in Philadelphia. After World War II, Soyer?s subjects shifted from working-class New Yorkers to dancers, women, and self-portraits. His works are held by the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and the Museum of Modern Art."
