[EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY - MINING]. OUTLEY, J.J. (1815-1892), photographer. Sixth plate daguerreotype featuring a bearded gentleman wearing a gold stick pin. St. Louis, MO.

Seated portrait of a man with a thick beard and long hairstyle, wearing a suit jacket and vest with a gold highlighted stick pin. (Some tarnishing to edges, minor weeping, few other minor imperfections; original seals.) Housed in a leatherette case (significant wear to spine, surface wear throughout). Mat stamped "J.J. Outley, Artist, St Louis." Pencil inscription on case behind image reads, "Ap[?] 15 1855."

John J. Outley was a daguerreotypist operating in St. Louis, Missouri in the 1850s. He has been listed at 132, 138, and 140 North Third Street in various directories. In December of 1858, Humphrey's Journal reported that Outley was seeking a partner due to his ill health.
