Description
[NATIVE AMERICANS]. SIGNOL, Emile, artist. C.H.C. Melody et les Indiens Ioways. Paris: Bertauts, 1845.

17 x 21 1/2 in. hand colored lithograph (including margins) (toning, spotting throughout, staining to lower margin, chipping and wear to edges). An illustration of George Catlin's touring troupe of Ioways in Paris in the summer of 1845, during their residency at the Salle Valentino. Twelve Ioway Indians are depicted in full native dress, including three chiefs (Mew-Hu-She-Kaw, New-Mon-Ya, Se-Non-Ty-Yah), three warriors, four women, and two children. They stand together with G.H.C. Melody, promoter, and Jeff Doraway, an African American who had been raised among the Ioway Indians and later served as their interpreter.
