oil on canvas measurements 40 x 35 cm framed measurements 60 x 55 cm German painter Born in the Black Forest Germany After beginning a life as a clock painter he entered the Karlsruhe academy in 1859 where he received classes from Schirmer and Des Coudres Later he studied and worked without great success in Düsseldorf Paris Italy Munich and Frankfurt am Main He followed the style of the early German masters particularly Altdorfer and Cranach Many of his works dealt especially with themes of the Christian faith and several of them are currently part of two private collections located in Liverpool A portrait of the artist and two other works The Guardian of the Valley and Idyll of Spring are located in the Dresden gallery Eve in Paradise and Peaceful Valley in the Frankfurt am Main museum other important works of the artist are Paradise Christ and Nicodemus The Prodigal Son Flight into Egypt Charon Pieta Adam and Eve Solitude Tritons as well as other landscapes and portraits He also made several lithographs and drawings and some murals located in a cafe in Frankfurt am Main and in Mr Pringsheimer's music room in Munich Hans Thoma died in Karlsruhe on November 7 1924 at the age of 85 origin Valencian private collection
