Description

A George III silver galleried salver John Carter, London 1773 Circular form with cast open-work border of vertical slats, with a Vitruvian rim and applied in relief with laurel swags over classical urn motifs and bearded portrait roundels, on four cast open-work bracket feet with swags, the centre with an engraved shield armorial within a husk border and bow tied ribbon above and motto below 'VERO NIL VERIUS', diameter 40cm, weight 65oz. Footnotes: Provenance: With Mary Cooke Antiques Limited 2013 The Patrick and Mavis Walker Silver Collection Literature: This salver is illustrated in Christopher Hartop's Catalogue, page 33, figure 49. Exhibited: Exhibition at Koopman Rare Art 'The Classical Ideal, English Silver, 1760 - 1840, June 2010 Probably after a design by James Wyatt commissioned by Charles Vere. These are the arms of Charles VERE (1749-1789) of St George Southwark, later of Fleet Street and at his death of Parliament Street, Westminster and his wife Martha LUCAS of Edith Weston, Rutland. They married in 1771 at the Burghley Chapel, Barnock Northamptonshire. Notably the arms appear without crest suggesting the arms were intended to be used by Martha VERE nee LUCAS. Charles VERE the son and eventual heir of Charles VERE (born 1719) banker of St George Southwark by Mary SMITH. His parents were married in 1746 at St George's Chapel Mayfair. Martha LUCAS was the daughter of Richard LUCAS (1784-1827) rector of Great Casterton, Rutland and Prebend of Lincoln by Mary HURST of Barrowby, Lincolnshire.
