Description
George III Sterling Silver Salver

hallmarked London, 1791-1792, by John Crouch & Thomas Hannam, of circular form, the "Chippendale" rim with robust applied acanthus edge and raised on four feet en suite, the plateau engraved with foliate rococo scrolls centering an armorial "per pale argent and sable, an eagle goutte displayed" below a crest of an arm in armour embowed.
dia. 15-1/2"; 62.32 t. oz.

Provenance: Private collection, New Orleans, Louisiana.
Condition
In quite good condition overall, with no dents, breaks or repairs noted. Some wear to the highest relief of the robust and well-executed acanthus edge. There are traces of gilding throughout (with the exception of the armorial and un-engraved surround) and particularly on the underside, causing a dull appearance (see the catalogue photograph); this gilding is likely not original and the piece would be well-improved by its professional removal. Small, 3/8" hammering flaw on the underside. Hallmarked (on the underside) with: 1) the sterling lion passant; 2) the London crowned leopard's head; 3) the date letter "q"for 1791-1792; 4) the George III bust duty mark; and 5) the "IC/TH" maker's mark of Crouch & Hannam; marks lightly worn but fully legible.
