ANTIQUE AND LARGE DECORATIVE JADE PALACE VASE AND LID, BIANHU
CHINA
Large decorative jade vases of this size are extremely rare. This vase standing over 16inches without it’s stand is exceptional in size. Carved from a single large piece of jade, (khotan green ?) of a transluscent green color. Carved as a pear shaped ‘Bianhu’ decorated with a taotie mask nicely carved in raised relief to either side. Handles carved as mythical creature heads with hanging rings. Pyramidal shaped cover which is crowned with an ovoide finial. Masterfully hollowed and polished to the whole of the inside. Vases of this size are usually referred to as ‘palace vases’ because their size and imposing presence can only lend compliment to the largest and most lavish of settings such as palaces, temples, official offices and in later times seen in the residences of the highest members in society.
