Description
A bronze plaque honoring Queen Boudica, 3" x 3"; 10 oz. Queen Boudica, also known as Boadicea or Boudicca, was a historical figure who played a significant role in ancient British history. She was a queen of the Iceni tribe, a Celtic people who inhabited an area in what is now eastern England during the 1st century AD.Boudica is best known for her rebellion against the Roman occupation of Britain in AD 60 or 61. The Roman historian Tacitus and the Greek historian Dio Cassius provide accounts of her life and the events surrounding her rebellion. The rebellion erupted after the death of Boudica's husband, King Prasutagus, who had been a client king under Roman rule. When Prasutagus died, the Romans attempted to seize control of the Iceni lands and mistreated Boudica and her daughters. In response, Boudica led a revolt against the Roman forces.Boudica's army, consisting of warriors from the Iceni tribe as well as other Celtic tribes, achieved initial success, famously sacking and burning the Roman settlements of Camulodunum (modern-day Colchester), Londinium (London), and Verulamium (St Albans). However, her rebellion was ultimately crushed by the Roman governor Gaius Suetonius Paulinus, who defeated her forces in a decisive battle. Despite her ultimate defeat, Boudica has remained a symbol of British resistance against foreign oppression. Over time, her story has been romanticized and mythologized, and she has become an enduring symbol of British nationalism and female leadership.
