Description

A Scottish Basket-Hilted Backsword Second Quarter Of The 18th Century With tapering blade double-edged towards the point (minor areas of pitting, nick on one edge) and with a double fuller over most of its length along the back on each side, the upper fuller on both sides etched with running foliage, iron guard of rectangular bars framing fretted panels pierced with stylised hearts and circles with incised line borders, the main panels centred on saltires, the side panels each with 'ram's horn' terminal pierced with a stylised heart, the rear quillon engraved 'A' beneath and originally extending to form a wrist-guard, bun-shaped pommel with flutes between incised lines, separate flattened button, fishskin-covered grip bound with a strand of wire and with a woollen tassel at the top, and remains of a buff-leather liner 85.3 cm. blade Footnotes: Exhibited The Swords and the Sorrows, Culloden Commemorative Exhibition, Culloden, 16 April-20 September 1996 Literature The Swords and the Sorrows, exhibition catalogue, cat. no. 1:12, p. 29 (illustrated) This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: * * VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium.
