Lawson (1929-2020) Lawson started his Air Force career in 1952 when he entered pilot training at Columbus Air Force Base. during the early portion of his career, Lawson served under various Generals flying missions and as an aide. Lawson transferred to Headquarters Strategic Air Command at Offutt Air Force Base in 1961 to become a European Force Application Team member. He graduated from Air Command and Staff College in 1964 and became chief of the Future Concepts Branch in 1967. In 1969 he completed the National War College and then served at McCoy Air Force Base, as deputy commander for operations of the 306th Bombardment Wing and subsequently took command of the 28th Bombardment Wing and then deployed to the Western Pacific. In August 1973, Lawson was appointed military assistant to the president and served in the White House until 1975. During his service, Lawson logged more than 7000 flying hours, 79 combat missions during the Vietnam War, and was promoted to the rank of 4-star general in July of 1980. He retired in December of 1986.
