Description
Excellent collection of award certificates, personal belongings, and photos of US Air Force General Richard L. Lawson. Most important is the ring binder collection of award certificates and certifications, and personal items such as plaques and plates. The ring binder includes: two citations to accompany the Air Force Commendation Medal, for the first and second oak leaves cluster; recommendation letters for ‘Award of Soldier’s Medal’ and ‘Award of the Commendation Ribbon’; diplomas and certifications from different Air University courses like ‘Squadron Officer Correspondence Course,’ ‘Primary Pilot Training,’ and more.Collection of personal belongings includes: pewter bowl, stamped into one side reads ‘With Admiration and Gratitude - From the Men and Women of Tactical Air Command, 8.25 x 6 inches; three pewter German plates; Delft plate, features an illustration of Air Force members and a plane, reads ‘AFSA DIVISION 16 - AMERICA’S FRONT LINE’; Turkish porcelain service plate presented to Lawson by General Necip Torumtay, Tua, Deputy Chief of Turkish General Staff, gilded service Turkish 'Sumerbank' plate; bronze Portuguese Air Force medallion celebrating 70 years of service; with four Air Force plaques presented to Lawson with National Defense University paperweight. Further included are two framed paintings, one of a large 6-propellor engine US Air Force aircraft 23.75 x 17.5 inches image, 27.5 x 21.25 inches framed. The other painting is of a U.S. Air Force rescue squadron plane, 19.5 x 14.5 image area, 22 x 26.25 inches framed. Rounding out the lot with 150+ photographs of Lawson at promotion events, in his personal life, professional portraits, etc. B/w and colored collection of photographs, around 8 x 10 inches each photo. With a poster of Israeli F-18 with note in blue ink to the bottom left reading ‘To General Lawson - with compliments Col S. Schucham - ISRAEL/STUTTGART -FEB’ 85-’ along with poster with messages dedicated to Lawson signed by other officers.Air Force General Richard L. Lawson (1929-2020) Lawson started his Air Force career in 1952 when he entered pilot training at Columbus Air Force Base. during the early portion of his career, Lawson served under various Generals flying missions and as an aide. Lawson transferred to Headquarters Strategic Air Command at Offutt Air Force Base in 1961 to become a European Force Application Team member. He graduated from Air Command and Staff College in 1964 and became chief of the Future Concepts Branch in 1967. In 1969 he completed the National War College and then served at McCoy Air Force Base, as deputy commander for operations of the 306th Bombardment Wing and subsequently took command of the 28th Bombardment Wing and then deployed to the Western Pacific. In August 1973, Lawson was appointed military assistant to the president and served in the White House until 1975. During his service, Lawson logged more than 7000 flying hours, 79 combat missions during the Vietnam War, and was promoted to the rank of 4-star general in July of 1980. He retired in December of 1986.
