Staunton Wereldschaak Tournooi Gronigen 1946. Single sheet headed as above, with five mounted Dutch postage stamps with the postmark of the event (dated 27 August, 1946), signed by all twenty of the participants. 10 5/8 x 8 3/8 inches (27 x 21 cm); imprinted with the title and insignia of the tournament at the head. Some toning. Usual folds. Framed, not examined out of frame.
The so-called "miracle tournament" was held in Groningen in August and September of 1946, just fifteen months after the end of the War in Europe. It began a new era in chess, as for the first time Soviet players in some numbers were allowed out of the USSR to compete. Identified signatures include the Canadian grandmaster Daniel Yanofsky; Herman Steiner, the American International Master; Arnold Sheldon Denker, an eminent American chess player; Martin Christoffel, the Swiss chess champion, Erik Lundin, the Swedish master; Gösta Stoltz, tied for 8-9th in the Groningen 1946 chess tournament; Mikhail Botvinnik, the overall winner of the competition, Savielly Tartakower, Max Euwe etc.
