Two 17th-Century Books Related to Machiavelli's The Prince

Pedro de Ribadeneira; Johannes Oranus, ed. PRINCEPS CHRISTIANUS ADVERSUS NICOLAUM MACHIAVELLUM, CATEROSQUE; HUIUS TEMPORIS POLITICOS. Mainz (Germany): Sumptibus Conradi Butgenij, 1603. Roman type with italic; translated from the original Spanish into Latin. Full calf, raised bands, ink manuscript, and gilt on spine, all edges speckled. 8vo; [16], 564, [6index]pp.. With woodcut on title, dedication, and printed marginalia. VD17 106623D. (Staining and wear to calf, with edgewear and corners rubbed, spine with wormholes, faded manuscript, and loss at head; cracking at hinges, binding remains sturdy; wormholes, especially at endpapers and hinges; damp staining and soiling, mostly at endpapers and index; first free endpaper partially detached, ink on title page verso, pages toned with occasional small mark or stain, overall pages unmarked. A good copy.)

Full vellum, yapp edges, manuscript on spine, all edges stained. 8vo; *8 A-K8 L2 2*2 (quire 2* mis-bound; final blank); [20], 162, [2]pp.; [30], 424, [6]pp. Roman type; text in Latin. With commentary, engraved frontispiece, and ornaments. (Vellum with light staining and discoloration; (2) pages of later manuscript bound in it at front, one restored; title page poorly repaired; occasional very light toning and foxing; a very good clean and sturdy copy.)

The first book is the Latin translation of Ribadeneira's The Christian Prince Against Machiavellianism. The first Spanish edition was published in 1595.
