Two 17th Century Books by Puritan Theologian Richard Baxter

Two early printed books by Puritan theologian Richard Baxter (1615-1691), including "A Treatise of Self-Denyall" (1660), and "The Reasons of the Christian Religion" (1667), the second volume one of his most famous works. 546pp total between the two books.

The lot is comprised of:

1. Richard Baxter, Pastor of the Church at Kederminster [Kidderminster], "A Treatise of Self-Denyall" (London: Robert White, for Nevil Simmons Bookseller in Kederminster [Kidderminster], and are to be sold by him there, and by William Gilbertson at the Bible in Giltspurstreet without Newgate, and by Joseph Nevil at the Plow in Pauls Churchyard, 1660). Rebound 1/4 spine and spandrels in chocolate morocco, gilt embossed spine, and red marbleized front and back covers. Replaced endpapers from Bennett, NY. A "Donald J. Zinn" bookplate is attached to the front pastedown endpaper. A bookplate engraving of Baxter after J. Riley / J. Caldwell is detached but included. Scattered minor to moderate foxing throughout, and water stains affecting the second half of the book. 7.125" x 5.5" x 1." 12mo. 329pp.

The lower left corner of the title page has been restored. Scattered dampstaining, darkened edges and corners, and chipped edges. Else very good. 7.75" x 6.25" x .75." 12mo. 217pp total.

Richard Baxter was a leader in the seventeenth-century English Presbyterian movement, a radical offshoot of Protestantism with historic ties to Scottish religious traditions. In the period following the Stuart Restoration and before King James II issued the Declaration of Indulgence in 1687, Baxter continued publishing influential religious treatises despite the threat of persecution. His mature work--published after 1665--was among the most famous.
