Description
This is an excellnt bird's-eye view of the Hungarian fortress settlement of Torokszentmiklos, close to Szolnok. It sits near the Tisza River. Fortified in the early sixteenth century in traditional Renaissance style with wide ditches and symmetrical bastions, it was captured by the Turks in 1553. The view depicts the fortress and village in flames after the Hungarian army recaptured the fort in October 1595. A minaret domites the skies. Drawn by George Hoefnagel. French text on verso.
