Provenance
Marion Scott Gallery, Vancouver, their label affixed verso;
Acquired from the above by the present Private Collection, Toronto.

In the Kwakwa̱ka̱ʼwakw culture, the Owl is a symbol of wisdom, known as the 'Wise One' and the keeper of knowledge. It features prominently in the T’seka (Winter Ceremonies), Tła’sala (Peace Dances), and the Atłak'ima (Dance of the Forest Spirits). This early work by Beau Dick captures the owl's stoicism with a fiercely hooked beak in bright orange, rounded eyes accentuated by a band of flaring green, and large, precisely carved sockets. The mask's red split u-forms on the cheeks subtly suggest wings, while black u-forms on the forehead and chin evoke feathers. Although this particular mask is not danced, other interpretations of Owl masks see performers mirroring the owl's characteristics, maintaining a forward gaze with bulging eyes.
