A GEORGE II SILVER CAKE BASKET

MARK OF PETER ARCHAMBO, LONDON, 1740

Details

Shaped oval, on four openwork lion's-mask and rocaille feet hung between an openwork foliate scroll apron centred with putto mask emerging from feathers and rocaille, the fluted sides pierced with panels of scrolls and diaperwork, applied above with fruiting vines, Ceres masks, wheatears and shell border, the overhead swing handle cast and chased with flowers and rocaille and demi-putti terminals each clasping cornucopia, the centre engraved with a coat-of-arms within drapery mantling and with flat-chased shell, scroll and vine border, marked under base, the handle unmarked

The arms are those of Weddell of Newby and Ripon, Yorkshire, presumably for Richard Weddell (formerly Elcock) (d. 1762).

Presumably for Richard Weddell (formerly Elcock) (d. 1762), by descent to his son,
William Weddell (1736-1792) of Newby Hall, Yorkshire, who married Elizabeth (1748-1831), daughter of Sir William Ramsden, 2nd Bt. (1672-1736) in 1771, by bequest to her nephew,
Sir John Ramsden, 4th Bt. (1755-1839), then by descent to,
Sir John Frescheville Ramsden, 6th Bt. (1877-1958), of Bulstrode Park, co. Buckingham.
