A pair of George II silver salt cellars
Paul de Lamerie, London 1746
Circular compressed cauldron form, the bellied sides with applied floral garlands between four satyr bearded masks and terminating on hoof feet, gilded interiors, the underside engraved with the crest of the HOWARD family, length 8cm, weight 14.6oz. (2)
Footnotes:
An almost identical salt is illustrated in 'Paul de Lamerie: His Life and Works' by Philip A S Phillips, plate LXXVII, page 92 provides a description and notes belonging to Lord Hotham.

At the date of assay (1746) there are five earldoms that use the crest illustrated and these are held by four different members of the HOWARD family.
These are:
Henry Bowes HOWARD (1687-1757) who succeeded in 1706 as the 4th Earl of Berkshire and in 1745 as the 11th Earl of Suffolk.

Henry HOWARD (1694-1758) who succeeded in 1738 as 4th Earl of Carlisle.

William Matthias STAFFORD-HOWARD (1718-1751) who succeeded in 1734 as 3rd Earl of Stafford.

Thomas HOWARD (1714-1763) who succeeded in 1743 as 2nd Earl of Effingham.
