A GEORGE II SILVER CHOCOLATE POT

MARK OF FRANCIS CRUMP, LONDON, 1743

Details

Tapering cylindrical on a moulded foot, the body chased overall with rocaille, scrolls, fruit and floral garlands, with bird's-neck spout and wood scroll handle, the cover with removable hinge-pin and surmounted by a bud finial hinged for a molinet, each side chased with a Rococo cartouche enclosing on one side an engraved coat-of-arms and on the other a crest with earl's coronet above, marked near rim shoulder, the cover and finial unmarked
11 1/4 in. (28.5 cm.) high
Gross weight 48 oz. (1,494 gr.)
The arms are those of Keppel, presumably for George Keppel, 3rd Earl of Albemarle (1724-1772). He was aide-de-camp to the Duke of Cumberland at the battle of Fontenoy in 1745, and the next year at Culloden. He married Anne, daughter of Sir John Miller Bt., in 1770.
