Description
Drayton, Michael. POEMS. [London]: [W. Stansby for Iohn Smethwicke], [1619.] Lacking 3 prelims, 105-112, 201-208, 259-262, 273-274, 299-308, 329-344, 401-408, 439-440, 465-472, and 487 (final leaf); title, additional engraved title, and final leaf provided here in facsimile; 7 leaves herein supplied from another copy (trimmed and shorter.) Period calf boards with initials I. R. to front board, rebacked. ***** A defective copy of this important collection of poems. Notably, with the early ownership signatures to a number leaves by John Rogers, and the "I. R." on the front board would be his initials (i.e. Ioannis Rogers.) This may well be the famous English Puritan (ca. 1570 – 1636); conjecture may lead us to believe that the missing portions of the book could have been removed by Rogers purposefully (if he found them objectionable.) The book also has a 17th century inscription of John Fleming (on a preliminary leaf we believe to have been supplied from another copy), Samuel Butcher (dated 1724), and then later John Mitford (1806.)
