Description
Noah Merrick (attributed.) Autograph manuscripts, 1766 to ca. 1774, comprising 16-page sermon notes on Philippians (1766), and 2-page notes on a sermon with Revolutionary themes (1774.) *************** Merrick graduated Yale in 1741 and served as the pastor of the first Congregational Church at Wilbraham, Mass. The script matches the hand of Merrick's sermon notes found at Ohio Wesleyan University and a note on the back of the second item relates to a member of the congregation at Wilbraham (Simeon Chaffee.) The second item is of particular note as it concerns the relation between the right of killing and enslaving in times of war. The first item refers to bloodshed in Europe, then "a teacher of rebellion." An interesting pair.
