Description
[AUTOGRAPHS & MANUSCRIPTS] -- [NORTHWEST TERRITORY & OHIO]. A group of 31 manuscript and partially printed documents, late 18th to early 19th century, including:Arrest warrant for Thomas Gregg in Ross County, "Territory of the United States North West of the River Ohio." 31 Dec. 1799. Signed by Edward Tiffin as Prothonotary. Tiffin would become the first Governor of the new state of Ohio in 1803 and serve until 1807.  A second partially printed document, also for the Northwest Territory, orders good and possessions of Charles Jamieson to be sold to the value of $43.34 to cover debts owed by him. Also signed by Edward Tiffin, Prothonotary.  Manuscript deposition of a William Patrick, 3 pages, Nov. 4, 1815, describes the location of an Indian Town known as New Chillicothe on Deer Creek up the Scioto River.Manuscript document, Coshocton County (Ohio), 29 Oct. 1821, confers United States citizenship on James Elder, "a native born citizen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland."A manuscript warrant for Harrison County, Indiana states that Ruth Walker left her infant Francois Walker at the house of Phebe Osborn and did not return for him. 15 Dec. 1817.A partially printed arrest warrant from ross County, OH for Samuel Smith is on an old form with "Territory....North West of the river Ohio" crossed out and "State of Ohio" written in. 31 Jan. 1803. This one is signed by Thomas Scott as Prothonotary. Scott would serve as Secretary of the Ohio Constitutional Convention and later on the Supreme Court of Ohio (among other positions, such as registrar at the land office in Cincinnati).A manuscript receipt dated 22 July 1814 orders the state to pay for five head of cattle for the commissary for the use of the Troops.Manuscript promissory note signed by John Minter, Indian fighter and hunter who retired to Delaware Co., Ohio from Culpepper, VA.Four fliers (same) for the services of George Knight, Ticket Agent, Ohio & Mississippi Railway, to arrange for "...contracts for families and household goods or stock to any railroad point in Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, Colorado, California, Arkansas and Texas."One group of 13 arrest warrants and 1 indictment for Amos Burgess for passing counterfeit money. March court term 1835 and previous to that (i.e., the warrants).  A group of three documents includes a summons for William Rutledge and Henry Bramble to give state's evidence in a future trial of John Johnson and (Private?) Pearsall of the US Army, the arrest warrant for the defendants and the indictment of the court at its May term, 1815. The court found "...in a certain tavern there (Jefferson Township, Ross County) and kept by one James Kilgore did unlawfully play at the game of cards for money-contrary to the statute in such case .... against the ... dignity of the State of Ohio."
