Description
Vance, Joseph. BOTSCHAFT DES GOUVERNORS VON OHIO AN DER SECHS UND DREYSSGSTEN GENERAL-VERSAMMLUNG…. [Columbus, OH]: Samuel Medary, 1837. 8vo, disbound. 26 pp. ************* An extremely scarce printing of Ohio Governor Joseph Vance's message to the General Assembly, printed in German. We trace no other copies, institutionally or elsewhere, of this German printing; a handful of the English language versions do appear in institutional holdings. Ohio saw an influx of German immigrants in the 1830s, drawn largely by the meat-packing and shipping industries in Cincinnati. Thus, printing in German would be necessary for an informed German-speaking constituency.Of note here also is the printer, Samuel Medary. Medary was a notable early Ohio and Kansas figure. He was born in Pennsylvania and moved to Ohio to begin his printing business in 1825. He was elected to the lower house of the Ohio legislature and also had a prosperous printing business before being appointed Territorial Governor of Kansas in the late 1850s. He resigned his governorship in 1860 and returned to his printing business in Ohio.
