Description: 3-pp. on 4-page conjugate sheet + smaller explanatory/docketing document on 4-page conjugate. Each of the slaves is named, with their racial designation (Africa or criollo), age (ranging from 2 months to 90 years), sex, occupation (all are campo, i.e field hands, even, apparently, the infants, toddlers and nonagenarians). The main document begins:
"Pormenor de ochiento negros de campo de varios sexos edades comprados por el qua suscribe Salvador Baro a d'Ambrosio de villena segun esritura publica hocha en 2 de Junio de 1868, en la escribania de M. Morales," which roughly translates as "Details of eighty country blacks of various sexes and ages purchased by the undersigned Salvador Baro from D. Ambrosio de Villena according to a deed published today on June 2, 1868, in the notary office of M. Morales."
The smaller docketing document is similar, reading:
En esta fecha he vendido a Don Salvador Baro ochenta negros campos aparecen de la adunta lista, y constan en la escritura otorgada en el oficio de Dr. Manuel Morales y Vinasera... Matanzas 2 de Junio 1868 [signed] Jose A de Villena. Ser Gobernador de esta Ciuda," translating to "On this date I have sold to Don Salvador Baro eighty blacks working the fields that appear on the list, and appear in the deed granted in the office of Dr. Manuel Morales y Vinasera... Matanzas June 2, 1868 [signed] Jose A[mbrosio] de Villena."
Condition
The first document with darkening, foxing, bleed-through of the ink and a bit of worming; 2nd with just a little worming; both very good.
