About the artist: Soviet Ukrainian painter. Member of the Union of Artists of the Ukrainian SSR. Vladimir Les was born on May 10, 1927 in the village of Andreikovtsy, Khmelnitsky region. Even in his school years he became interested in drawing, but the Second World War began. At the age of 17, Vladimir enlisted as a volunteer in the navy (the call for military service in 1944 was from 18 years old). He served on the Molotov cruiser of the Black Sea Fleet. For military merits, he was awarded the Order of the Patriotic War of the II degree and many medals. During the term of service to sailor Vladimir Les, the artistic fate smiled: the famous Russian artist Pyotr Maltsev painted a picture about the heroism of the sailors of the cruiser Molotov. I needed an assistant who had artistic abilities. He suggested that Vladimir Lesya sketch the characters among his colleagues in the picture. Having appreciated the guy’s extraordinary abilities, he offered to enter N. Krupskaya Moscow People’s University. Gave a professional recommendation. After a successful two-year correspondence study at the university in 1951, having been demobilized, Vladimir Les entered the Odessa Grekova Art School, which he successfully completed. The graduate work of Vladimir Stepanovich “For exemplary service” (marine subjects), the state commission recognized as the best and recommended a picture for a republican exhibition (Kiev-1957). For some time he worked at the Vinnitsa art and production plant. Since 1976, he finally settled in the city of Khmelnitsky. In 1978 he joined the Union of Artists of Ukraine. In 1976-1985, together with artists Alexander Kiselev and Leonid Bessarab, he created five dioramas in Shepetovka, Ostropol, Starokonstantinov, Khmelnitsky, Letava, dedicated to the liberation of Khmelnytsky from Nazi invaders. It was with these large-scale paintings that Vladimir Les established himself as a battle painter with deep monumental thinking and an original style of graphic writing. These grandiose canvases even today amaze the audience with the scale of their artistic compositions and stylistic features - an extensive, bold brushstroke, juiciness of colors, colorful images, contrasting chiaroscuros, the capacity of generalizations and the intense dynamics of battle ... This is also observed in individual canvases by Vladimir Les, in particular: “The Curse you tyrants! "," In a formidable hour "," Farewell of the Slav "," Downed German ace "and others. Psychologically, the sentiments of warriors and ordinary people, heated by great grief, are subtly conveyed. His painting “Chronicle” is particularly striking in its “documentary” and dynamic tension: the mother recognizes her son on the screen, marches with her company to the front. By the way, a photo illustration of this picture was repeatedly replicated in periodicals and calendars of the post-war period. The theme of war and labor post-war heroism Ukrainian, in particular Podolyan, became the leading one in the artist’s work. It runs through almost all of his canvases with a red thread: “With a system in operation” (demobilization and work on the country's new buildings), “Our regiment arrived” (a newborn son in the officer’s family), “Police captain M. Lukashchuk”, “Police colonel V . Nowhere ”,“ Milling machine G. Nikevich ”,“ Electric Roman ”and others. A separate topic of the artist was the coverage of the heroism of Podolye during the years of the so-called civil war (based on the works of Nikolai Ostrovsky). Many canvases of V. Lesya are devoted to the heroic struggle of the Podolye against the colonial policy of Poland during the Hetman period: “On the site of the Piljavec battle”, “Local historian” (near the fireplace stele with an engraved portrait of Colonel Ivan Ganzhi, an associate of Bohdan Khmelnitsky who died in Podillia). In the work of Vladimir Les - about 250 paintings, 13 personal and more than 60 collective exhibitions. Laureate of the regional prize named after V. Rozvadovsky (2002) and the city prize named after B. Khmelnitsky. He died on July 12, 2007. A museum room has been opened in the native village of Vladimir Les at a local school, dedicated to the artist’s life and career.
