Small clothbound photo album, 7 x 6 in., containing 78 5.5 x 3.5 in. sepia photos and two loose postcards of the U.S.S. Trippe during the World War I era. Inscribed on the interior cover with the owner’s name ‘R. Hornburg’. Images include: Destroyers amid fleet maneuvers; Hospital Cay in Guantanamo Bay; vessels U.S.S. Kansas, Connecticut, and Dixie; landings in Newport, Rhode Island; the testing of torpedoes showing them being shot from the tube, resting in the water at the beginning and end, and recovery at the end of their runs, loading torpedoes into the tubes; group photos of the crew of the U.S.S. Trippe; ‘business end’ of a three-inch gun; candid shots of leisure hours; views from the bridge; dropping the anchor; dry-dock; Pasig River in Manila; submarines being loaded into the water and submerging; torpedo room of submarines; Philippine locals; and a monument indicating where the first American flag was hoisted over the Philippines on May 3, 1828. The album displays some wear to the covers, but the photos remain in fine condition. In 1911 the U.S.S. Trippe joined the destroyers and submarines assigned to the Atlantic Torpedo Fleet, participating in exercises off Newport, R.I., Boston, and the Virginia Capes. Jan. 14, 1912, she dropped anchor at Guantanamo Bay for three months of training. In 1914 the ship and her crew found themselves in Mexico supporting the U.S. Marines who seized the customs house at Veracruz. U.S.S. Trippe continued participating in exercises in Newport, Virginia, Guantanamo, etc. May 21, 1917, the Trippe left for the United Kingdom where she served as an escort for Allied convoys on the last leg of their voyage from North America to England and France. There is only one verified account of engagement with a German U-boat on Sep. 18, 1917, spotting the distinctive wake of a submarine, though the U-boat was moving in the opposite direction and no other contact was made.
