Description
A group of metal relics from a German air raid on the Port of Tilbury, a significant point of entry for displaced persons from the Baltic States liberated from concentration camps and other internment after World War II. The docks themselves were also the gathering point for small ships evacuating British troops from Dunkirk in 1940. The town of Tilbury played an important role in the war overall and was the recipient of multiple bombing raids. Our relics were acquired by R. Chapman, a Special Constable, after an air raid on January 30, 1944 and include: radio window foil, remnants of barrage balloons, aircraft fabric, shrapnel and other bomb fragments and a section of an air troop’s parachute. All housed within a tin box 8 x 4 x 3 in., with a tag of provenance affixed to the lid and signed by Chapman adding: ‘5/C 127’, ‘30 Jan. 1944’.
