USCGC EAGLE/ TRAINING SHIP 'HORST WESSEL' LOG BOOKS
Item Details
Description
Pair of logbooks created and kept by Kriegsmarine sailor Walter Kramer covering his service aboard the 295 foot German built bark 'Horst Wessel' named after the Nazi Party Stormtrooper 'martyr' of the same name killed by communists in 1930. The impressive sailing vessel, launched by Hitler himself, was the pride of the German training fleet and was taken by the U.S. at war's end as war reparations. It remains in service as a cadet training vessel today. Kramer's carefully penned and illustrated 82pp. 4to. hardbound log covers the period 30 June 1938 to 17 October 1938 as the young sailor served aboard the vessel visiting ports throughout the U.K., Scandinavia, Germany, etc. It opens with a tribute and photograph to the ship's namesake, Horst Wessel. Kramer then lists the names of all officers aboard, as well as his fellow members of '13.Gruppe'. The log itself commences at the shipyard Deutsches Werke in Kiel on June 30, 1938 - just three months before the signing of the Munich Pact. They remain in the vicinity for a few weeks, and it seems received or are at least reviewed by Hitler. There follows a series of transits and port visits throughout northern Europe, including Skagerrak, Edinburgh, the Firth of Forth, Sogne Fjord, Balholm, Esefjord, Kattegat, Kiel, Travemunde, and additional nearby locales. Several photographs of the vessel, men amongst the yards, hand-drawn maps and flags, etc. extra-illustrate the log. WITH: Kramer's approx. 60pp. 4to. bound notebook of his with handwritten notes from an NCO course, penned in the winter immediately after his with his 'Horst Wessel' log, meticulously-written. Kramer, now a member of '5. Gruppe' at Friedrichsort (outside Kiel), again lists all of his officers, his code of conduct, and dozens of 'Questions' and 'Answers' written out which are crucial to his NCO training. Fine condition overall. An excellent presentation worth of translation.
