Description
On May 7, 1943, Gen. George Erskine and the 7th Armored Division or ‘Desert Rats’ captured Tunis, which helped lead to the surrender of the Axis Powers in Africa only six days later. This lot is comprised of three telegrams, all dated May 14, 1943, congratulating Erskine on his victory. One message reads in part: ‘...The whole regiment sends you and the battalions greetings and congratulations on [a] glorious finish to long and arduous campaigns from Egypt to Tunis. We are very proud...’. Accompanied by an A.L.S. penned by Erskine on his personal letterhead, 1p. 8vo., Egypt, Nov. 18, 1957, in part: ‘...The soldiers are pleased to do their job and very grateful to feel they have full support from home...’. This letter was written during the Suez Crisis which resulted in Britain being maligned as a ‘second tier’ world power. Four pieces, very good.
