MONTGOMERY, BERNARD LAW. 1887-1976.
Autograph Letter Signed ('B.L. Montgomery'), British Embassy, Cairo, December 7, 1942, 2pp, 116 x 171mm, to Major General George Erskine, with autograph envelope, vertical crease, bisecting Montgomery's signature, excellent overall.

MONTGOMERY CLOSES IN ON THE DESERT FOX DURING THE FIRST BATTLE OF EL ALAMEIN.
In the midst of the First Battle of El Alamein, Montgomery writes to Major General Erskine of the 7th Armoured Division regarding his movements. He closes the letter with a note on his pursuit of Rommel: 'I do not think Rommel can get his chaps away & we may do him in on 16 Dec.'
Although the Second Battle of El Alamein was one of the first major Allied land victories, Rommel was able to withdraw his weakened forces to Tunisia.
