Description
(1899 - 1964) German general during World War II who commanded several divisions, including the 6th, 9th, and 76th Infantry Divisions. He was a recipient of the Knight's Cross. Good content T.L.S. in German, 3pp. 4to., Dec. 11., 1960, to an American researcher. In part: 'I have to apologize [for the delayed response]...illness from the 10.5 years in Russian prison did not allow me to write earlier...as a result of the emotional shocks caused by our 1945 defeat, feelings toward the German past changed greatly...Many of our German compatriots fell from one extreme to the other...reluctant to remember the military past of our people...just as every person needs time and distance from events after serious failures, this is also the case in the historical life of peoples. This is particularly true to our people, who have such an eventful, contrasting history as hardly any other...In your letters, you mentioned General Grossmann. I have known him for 40 years...I had some very interesting material, especially from our campaigns in Poland and France and from our tank advance on Moscow (Guderian's tank troops)...' He signs 'Brucker' at the conclusion in blue ink. Fine.
