Description
(1901 - 1945) Wife of Nazi Germany's Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels. A prominent member of the Nazi Party, she was a close ally, companion and political supporter of Adolf Hitler. As Berlin was being overrun by the Red Army at the end of World War II in Europe, she and her husband fatally poisoned their six children before they committed suicide. Rare, fine association A.L.S. 'Magda' on her personal letterhead, 4pp. 8vo., Schwanenwerder, [n.d., but ink docket notes '12/7/45'], to Helene ('Heli') Bougler, wife of PHILIPP BOUHLER (1889-1945), a Nazi war criminal who supervised Hitler's euthanasia program which ordered the 'mercy killings' of thousands of retarded, deformed and mentally ill Germans. She writes, in part: '...A thousand thanks for thinking of me on my birthday and for the lovely chrysanthemums you sent me. I am glad to have an opportunity to write to you because I am often so very sad that I don't hear from you. What are you doing and how are you? We haven't seen one another for such a long time that I don't really know anymore what you look like. I have only through other people that you look more beautiful than ever and I am so very happy about that. We are all well. The children are growing and developing nicely and that is a great happiness for us. My husband works like a horse and I follow my obligations as well as I can. In this difficult time and with the added burden of more work for all of us I am nonetheless happy and in good form as far as my health is concerned. At the moment I am undergoing a course of injections for weight gain because I weigh only [?] kilograms. How much I long to see you again. If you don't come to Berlin I think I must invite myself to Nuszdorf. I would really like to do that after Christmas if you can't come to Berlin first. We are still in Schwanernwerder but at the end of the month we shall go to Berlin for three months. Please write to me, even if it is only a short note. Looking forward to hearing from you, I am your 'old' Magda'. Dampness has caused some of the text to lighten substantially, but the great majority, as well as the signature, is fine, and almost all is legible. Estimated accordingly. Of course, if this letter was written in February, 1945, Goebbels would go with her children to Berlin and never leave - the children killed by Magda, and she and Joseph committing joint suicide. Bouhler and his wife, Helene, were arrested by American troops at Schloss Fischhorn in Bruck near Zell-am-See on 10 May 1945. Helene jumped to her death from a window at Schloss Fischhorn. On 19 May, Bouhler killed himself using a cyanide capsule while in the US internment camp at Zell-am-See.
