Description
An associated pair of Egyptian banded alabaster canopic jars, possibly Late Period, each of thick walled ovoid form; the larger jar with a lid carved in the form of a Jackal head represents Duamutef under the protection of the Goddess Neith 17.5"h; the second with a lid carved in the form of a baboon head representing 'Hapi', a son of Horus who protected the throne of Osiris in the underworld 17"h. Provenance: Descended in the family of General Sir Maxwell of the British Army, who served as the Military Governor of Egypt during the period as a colony of the Crown. His service lasted from 1866 to 1921 including the Boer War.
