Item Details
Description
A nice Egyptian canopic jar, Late Period, c. 664 – 332 BC, the carved alabaster lid in the form of the head of Hapi, one of the four ‘Sons of Horus’ which protected the throne of Osiris in the underworld. He is depicted as a hamadryas baboon and protected the lungs of the deceased. The jar itself is carved from limestone with vertical bored descending 2/3 the length. Of thick construction and most likely paired together from other jars. H: 10 3/5 in (27cm). Ex Philadelphia private collection.
