Seven Assorted Portraits and Boxes, Europe and America, 19th/20th century. 1. One thermoplastic or 'gutta percha' union case with profile portrait medallion of George Washington signed 'F. GOLL' in the mold, containing two tintype portraits in oval reserves identified as Mr. & Mrs. J.H. Churchill on a scrap of paper, retaining paper lining printed with inscription, 'Genuine Union Case. Improved. Fine Gilt and Burnished Hinge. S. Peck & Co., Manufacturers' of Hartford, Connecticut, 3 1/4 x 3 3/4 in. 2. One portrait miniature of a man with handlebar moustache signed 'CDE' at right edge, mounted in glazed oval reserve of ebonized period frame, 4 x 4 1/2 in. 3. One burlwood box with friction lid relief-carved with title 'Voltaire et J.J. Rousseau' above the respective profile portraits, diam. 3 1/4 in. 4. One burlwood box with shell liner forming friction lid, the lid relief-carved with titled scene 'Colonne de la Plac Vendome', diam. 3 1/4 in. 5. One flint glass box set in rose gold frame, the lid containing sulphide portrait of a young boy wearing jacket with epaulettes, flanked by engraved initials H.V., diam. 2 1/8 in. 6. One shell box with glazed lid containing the profile portrait of a young man painted en grisaille and signed 'Sauvage' below shoulder, diam. 3 in. 7.
