Holyoake

1882 --THE ROCHDALE PIONEERS - THIRTY-THREE YEARS OF CO-OPERATION IN ROCHDALE - IN TWO PARTS-- Both parts are bound in a single volume. Inscribed (to original owner), signed and dated by GEORGE JACOB HOLYOAKE. Decorative cover. Presents well-- overall very nice and bright.

The Rochdale Principles are a set of ideals for the operation of co-operatives-- set out in 1844 by the Rochdale Society of Equitable Pioneers in Rochdale, England, these form the basis of principles which co-ops around the world still continue to use.

George Jacob Holyoake (1817-1906) was an English secularist, co-operator and newspaper editor. In 1840, Holyoake became a 'socialist missionary' and follower of social reformer Robert Owen, a founder of Utopian socialism and the co-operative movement. During this period Holyoake moved to Worcester in west-central England and became a full-time socialist lecturer. G.J. Holyoake was a leading proponent of the co-operative movement who also gained prominence in the 'secularist' press-- Holyoake is credited with coining the terms 'secularism' and 'jingoism'.

Bumped at one corner, 2" tear at bottom of rear endpaper, a few worn spots around spine.
