Description
Rosenberg, Samuel (Sam) (American/Pittsburgh, 1896-1972), Self Portrait with Pipe, 1921, oil on canvas, signed and dated lower left, 26 x 19 inches, in a period carved gilt wood frame 32 x 25 inches. One of Rosenberg's earliest self-portraits, and one of very few of his paintings from before 1925 to appear at auction. In the 2003 monograph Samuel Rosenberg: Portrait of a Painter by Barbara Jones, the author discusses Rosenberg's early self-portraits on page 15. This one is described there as "a more mature, three-quarter-length Self Portrait, with pipe in his mouth, clean-shaven, and dressed in a suit, tie, and white shirt, an attire that would become his trademark." The painting is not pictured in the book, but it is included in the catalogue raisonne in the back.
