Beginning in 1934,Affandi began teaching himself how to paint.He is married to an artist, Maryati.In the 1950s,Affandi began to create expressionist paintings. Marking his style is known as Squeeze Tube. Affandi paints by squeezing the paint directly out of the tube. He stumbled across this technique when he was planning to draw a line one day. When he lost his patience in his search for the lost pencil,he applied paint directly from the tube. The resulting effect, as he discovered, is that painted objects look more vivid. He also feels more free to express his feelings when he uses his hands instead of a paintbrush.Eventually he became a great oil painter in Indonesia. Collector Mr Hassan, born in 1939, is a former consultant of Christie's Singapore's oil painting department.Hassan met Affandi through Dullah's introduction. He recalled visiting Affandi's home and climbing a tree with Affandi, there was a table and chairs on the tree, so they drank coffee together on the tree and chatted together. After the chat, he sold many of his works to Hassan. Hassan continued to buy Affandi's works for many years.
