Biography: Born: 1896 - 1972. Samuel Rosenberg's career as an artist and teacher spans nearly six decades. His style evolved during his career that can be described in four periods. From 1915-1930 Rosenberg mainly painted portraits. The artist turned to Pittsburgh's urban landscape and American Scene* paintings from 1930-1942. From 1942 -1952, he experimented with allegory* and abstraction, and finally from 1949-1972 during the period when the artist felt he had come into his own, he explored Abstract Expressionism*. Throughout his career Rosenberg's art always emphasized the the importance of light.Rosenberg was born in Philadelphia on July 28, 1896. In 1907 at the age of eleven, the artist moved with his family to Pittsburgh, a city that would influence his art for the rest of his life.Rosenberg spent forty years teaching art at Carnegie Institute of Technology now Carnegie Mellon University. Rosenberg encouraged his students to follow their own emotions, reflect upon personal experiences, and paint from their heart. Known as a kinder and gentler faculty member, it was he along with "Papa" Hyde who supported Andy Warhol after his freshman year when the other professors were not going to invite the young artist to continue at the school. Rosenberg taught Warhol during his junior and senior years at Carnegie Tech.Samuel Rosenberg had solo exhibitions in New York, Boston, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. He participated in major exhibition including San Francisco's Golden Gate Exposition and New York World's Fair in 1939. He participated in the Whitney Museum's early biennials. His work was exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art, the Corcoran Gallery, and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. At the Carnegie Museum of Art he had two solo exhibitions, and he participated in every Carnegie International exhibition from 1933 to 1967.
