Description
An engraved Admiral Lord Howe commemorative rummer, circa 1795-1800
The generous ovoid bowl with a three-masted man-of-war in full sail titled 'QUEEN CHARLOTTE' above, the reverse with the monogram 'H' beneath a coronet and plume of five ostrich feathers, within a frame of stars incorporating the inscription 'JUNE 1 1794', resting on a collar above a short plain stem and square 'lemon squeezer' foot, 16.3cm high
Footnotes:
This goblet commemorates Lord Howe's victory over the French off Ushant, which he fought in his flagship HMS Queen Charlotte, and which became known as the Battle of the Glorious First of June 1794. Please see lot 18 in this sale.
Condition
In good condition save for a shallow sliced chip underneath the corner of the foot approximately 6mm wide. A small number of typical tiny fleabite nicks to the corners and edge of the footrim are of little significance, but include an associated small bruise to one of the corners.
