A German engraved commemorative (memento mori) goblet possibly Johann Sigismund Menzel of Warmbrunn, Silesia, circa 1785, the round funnel bowl set with a silhouette panel of the bust of a man in profile beneath a coronet, verso engraved with a tomb inscribed L'AMI , supported on a hexagonal stem and faceted foot, 19.5cm high Provenance: The late Christopher Sheppard. Cf. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, for a similar goblet and cover, accession no. 27.185.102a,b.
