Rare early "Open Mouth Weedless" introductory box, with a clear lure illustration and marked "Pat. Pending". With a large number 501 stamped on one end, light wear/soiling, tear from one finger cut-out, and two separated corners on the box bottom, at least VG+ condition, all common to these rarely seen late teens boxes, this being in much better condition than most and including the Sheridan R. Jones collection stamp on the interior of the lid. The bait is finished in striking large scale redside, solid Ex, bright and shiny, definitely unfished. Also included is a large format fold out catalog, stamped with prices "Effective April 1, 1920", about E- with wear and soiling. This exact combination is featured in "The Life and Legend of Sheridan R. Jones" on page 54. Not only one of the toughest of the intro boxes to acquire, but it would be impossible to upgrade this Open Mouth Shiner.

Referred to as "America's pioneering outdoor writer", Sheridan Jones (1881-1958) was certainly one of the most respected and prolific angling writers of his era. Many of the lures offered in this auction, where noted, were personally owned by Jones. Several were given to the esteemed author and outdoor writer for his professional opinion, others as gifts by lure makers vying for his favor. Stated best by author Joseph Hilko in his 2010 book The Life and Legend of Sheridan R. Jones: "Jones' legacy as an educator, naturalist, professional writer and world-class angler is worthy of remembrance today".
