sinew-sewn, beaded American flag motifs on one side and geometric on the other in colors of navy blue, red white-heart, greasy green, greasy blue, translucent burgundy, and faceted brass against a white ground; brightly colored quilled rawhide slats line the lower seam, terminating in hide fringe

overall length 34-1/4 inches

In 1904, Charles Carpenter photographed Thomas Crow and Nellie Jumping Eagle (1880-1939) holding this tobacco bag during the Louisiana Purchase Exposition in St. Louis, Missouri. Carpenter was hired as the Field Museum's first photographer (1899-1947), taking over 2000 images at the Exposition.
