Description
William Thompson Bartoll (American, Marblehead, (1817-1859). Portrait of Robert Treat Paine, Jr. (1835-1910) as a Child , Circa 1843. Oil on canvas, the little boy depicted half-length, holding a book, (23.125 x 20 inches).Frame: H: 28.625 in., W: 25.25 in., D: 2.625 in.Thomas Treat Paine, who legally changed his name to Robert Treat Paine, Jr., was the great-grandson of the patriot and signer of the Declaration of Independence. He was a lawyer, philanthropist and internationally known peace activist. A social reformer, Paine was strongly committed to helping Boston's poor population; in particular he was responsible for the improvement of ventilation and sanitation in a tenement house known as the "Crystal Palace." He was head of the Workingman's Building Association and supervised the construction of more than 200 affordable small houses in the South, End, Roxbury and Jamaica Plain neighborhoods of Boston. He provided fellowships for the study of society's ethical issues and the problems of the poor, the construction of Trinity Church in Boston, the Children's Aid Society, the Congress of Workingman's Clubs, and he was President of the American Peace Society until his death in 1910. He and his wife, Lydia Lyman, commissioned Henry Hobson Richardson and Frederick Law Olmsted to design a house and country estate in Waltham, known as Stonehurst, which was completed in 1886.
