Description
Matilda Walker's English Pictorial Needlework Sampler, Depicting Skipton Primitive Methodist Chapel, Yorkshire, Late Nineteenth Century. Worked in wool threads on canvas with a picture of the chapel flanked by urns filled with tall flowers, surrounded by birds and various vases and urns of flowers enclosing the verse "The morning flowers display their sweets/ and gay their silken leaves unfold,/ as careless of the noon-tide heats/ as fearless of the evening cold," above "Matilda Walker/ Skipton PM Chapel," all within a meandering clover border. Frame: H: 24.875 in., W: 24 in., D: 1.25 in. Provenance: The Dingman Collection, Hampton, New Hampshire. The Skipton PM Chapel was designed by architect Thomas Howdill of Leeds, and built between 1878-1879.
