Description
Pre-Columbian, Gulf Coast of Mexico, Veracruz, ca. 3rd to 7th century CE. A hand-built pottery head of a figure bearing an enormous smile. The teeth, ear spools, and eyes are decorated with applied bitumen pigment, and the face features full lips and a prominent nose beneath a textured cap. Size: 3" L x 3.625" W x 5.625" H (7.6 cm x 9.2 cm x 14.3 cm); 8.6" H (21.8 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private Tennessee, USA collection; ex-Arte Primitivo, New York, USA, July 21, 2016, lot 463; ex-Dr. Herbert J. Kayden & Dr. Gabrielle Reem Kayden collection, acquired in the 1960s to 1970s

Condition
This is a fragment of a larger figure as shown. Chips and abrasions around face and neckline, with light fading to bitumen decorations, and light earthen deposits, otherwise in great condition. Nice preservation to facial expression.
